Most of these year end lists come out in December, but some publications seem to post their list earlier and earlier each year, so I thought it was time to start a thread.

    Quick recap from 2017:

Both Metacritic and albumoftheyear.org posted an aggregate list of the best albums chosen by music critics and both sites reported the same top 5 albums:

    1. 95 DAMN. by Kendrick Lamar
    2. 91 Melodrama by Lorde
    3. 86 CTRL by SZA
    4. 88 MASSEDUCTION by St. Vincent
    5. 86 American Dream by LCD Soundsystem

    http://www.metacritic.com/feature/best-of-2017-music-critic-top-ten-lists
    http://www.albumoftheyear.org/list/summary/2017/

Metacritic used data from 210 published Top 10 lists to compile their list, while albumoftheyear.org used data from 131 lists.

Plus albumoftheyear.org also posted an aggregate list for the best songs:
    http://www.albumoftheyear.org/songs/best/2017/

    1. Kendrick Lamar – HUMBLE.
    2. Cardi B – Bodak Yellow
    3. Kendrick Lamar – DNA.
    4. Lil Uzi Vert – XO Tour Llif3
    5. Lorde – Green Light

    2018 Year End Lists:

Several publications have already posted their 2018 lists.

    MOJO magazine

    1. Kamasi Washington – Heaven and Earth
    2. Arctic Monkeys – Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino
    3. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever – Hope Downs

    5. Christine and the Queens – Chris
    6. Idles – Joy as an Act of Resistance
    7. Ryley Walker – Deafman Glance
    8. Courtney Barnett – Tell Me How You Really Feel
    9. Spiritualized – And Nothing Hurt
    10. The Breeders – All Nerve

Full Top 50 from MOJO here:

    6. Robyn – Honey

    Original list on TIME.com:

Some publications like The Guardian, won’t post their lists until mid December, but the albumoftheyear aggregate list for best albums and songs of 2018 has been started here:

    http://www.albumoftheyear.org/list/summary/2018/
    http://www.albumoftheyear.org/songs/best/2018/

Metacritic Best of 2018: Music Critic Top Ten Lists (added 26/Nov/2018):

    http://www.metacritic.com/feature/critics-pick-top-10-best-albums-of-2018

Difficult to predict this year. Most of the high scores on Metacritic and albumoftheyear are from low charting albums, so these could be ignored by the mainstream media.

Perhaps someone like Janelle Monáe has the right balance between mainstream appeal, without getting snubbed by the indie publications.

I think Janelle won’t rank #1 on several lists, but she will have enough #1s and top 5 rankings to rank as the #1 album of the year on Metacritic and albumoftheyear.

Thanks alex. I would like to add that according to Acclaimed Music (which gives more space to non US magazines and publications), the top 5 from last year is:

    1. DAMN., Kendrick Lamar
    2. American Dream, LCD Soundsystem
    3. Melodrama, Lorde
    4. MASSEDUCTION, St. Vincent
    5. A deeper understanding, The War on Drugs

    http://acclaimedmusic.net/year/2017a.htm

Also, there are a couple of things I really enjoy from this very initial ranking but at the end, I fear PoweR will be proven right.

This magnificent start makes me wonder if Low can stay in the top 5 until the end. Top 10 seems very likely at least. I still think Janelle is topping the ranking, but only if you ignore many European lists because her album is –
rightfully so – not adored here. Happy to see Kacey Musgraves so low so far and it’s nice to see Sons of Kemet, LUMP and Young Fathers all mentioned somewhere.

Not many mainstream albums are being mentioned. It kinda has been an iffy year for it.

Cardi B is starting to show up more.

And more Kamasi mentions. Definitely an AOTY darkhorse.

I expected Scorpion to flop on the year-end lists. It did not get great initial reviews. EIL did well initially but is flopping now.

    Stereogum Best of 2018

Good to see Beach House getting some recognition for their latest album. There are also some great albums just outside the Top 10.

    http://www.stereogum.com/featured/the-best-albums-of-2018/

I notice some lists include Boygenius and others have Lucy Dacus, who is part of Boygenius. I wonder how much this works to their disadvantage when reviewers hesitate to put the same artist in the list twice.

Mitski could be a real threat for the most #1 and Top 10 placing at the current rate. On the albumoftheyear.org list she has three #1 placings, the same as Kamasi Washington and one more than Janelle Monáe.
